Donald Trump is not the first or last politician who is, has, or will lie.  The accepted cliché of the dishonest pol is the conventional wisdom generally used as a hammer to bludgeon ideas or legislators with whom we disagree. We have all heard it, “all politicians lie!”

Donald Trump has offered something new, a politician who volunteers untruth. Maybe borne from his need to entertain, fill a celebrity fulfillment gene, or just for giggles, it has become his calling card. In any event, if disingenuousness were a valued piece of art, Trump would be Picasso.  Generally, fabrications by the anti-iconoclast are crafted for strategic advantage or something more elementary– hiding the truth. That takes this conversation into an area that has been the subject of speculation since a year and a day ago. Why does the currently elected President of the United States who started his career with an unnecessary trope, do it?  Donald Trump made himself the king of birtherism, with no need to traffic in the absurd. He had no serious political aspirations and had been a Democratic supporter for most of his life. So, there was no strategic value.  Maybe he is addicted to hearing his name mentioned on TV?

Why did he become a conspiracy nut, and to what end?

The long list of mendacities by Mr. Trump has been repeated and printed ad nauseam, so no need for that, but I do fear what the result of his being ignored will be. I think that would be a fate worse than death for “The Donald.” After railing against the Chinese, calling them currency manipulators and trade cheats for over a year, they threw him a parade with fireworks, cannons and his name in lights and he rolled over like a puppy, good boy, good boy…

His cowering, when literally face to face with the objects of his vitriol, is becoming a disturbing pattern. He sent his bodyguard with a letter to fire James Comey.  After months of his deafening harangue about making Mexico pay for the “Wall,” when he finally met Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto he lost his nerve.

His Asian tour is the latest example of the President’s unexplained volunteerism when it comes to deceit. He could have simply said he wanted to renegotiate with China without threatening something he cannot deliver alone. He also made a relationship, he now needs, much more difficult.  China has significant sway in taming Kim Jong-un’s provocative saber-rattling in North Korea.  Independents and disillusioned Democrats who voted for him are [not] seeing first-hand the healthcare changes, “on day one,” the “Wall” or the immediate stoppage of American carnage. His promise was, “It stops, right here…,” but his strange Id made him volunteer the additional fib “right now.” Couple that with “I alone can fix it,”  it now appears, to be just self-aggrandizing clap-trap.

Again, I ask the question, why do it…?

Sure, political speeches all contain a variation of, “a chicken in every pot” but there is something different about this…

Trump relishes the deception, the dishonesty, the myth, the aspersion, the whopper, turning the page of my thesaurus…sigh… a lie.
